- Teacher is someone who will be a central in teaching learning process, especially in the classroom. Teacher role is a set of related behavior by the teacher to reach their goals. Teacher play different role during the teaching learning process depending on the situation and the students’ needs. In teaching speaking teacher has responsibility to make students active to speak English. The purpose of this study is to know the teacher roles in teaching speaking at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. In this study the writer used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the study was the teacher who taught class VII at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang. In collecting the data, two types of instruments were used including observation and interview. The data of the study were analyzed qualitatively in the form of narration. The result of the study showed that the teacher acted more than one roles during teaching learning process. Those roles were motivator, facilitator, counselor and evaluator. The teacher roles in teaching speaking at MTs Muhammadiyah 1 Malang were appropriate and it made the students more active in the classroom. So, the writer suggests the teacher to maintain the roles during teaching learning process.
