  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is welding process that is used for welding steel such as ASTM A283C Steel. Micro structure and mechanical properties of weld metal were influenced by many factors such as chemical composition, cooling rate and preheat. This research aims to study effect of preheat on weld metal micro structure and mechanical properties. Welding was carried out using GTAW process with DC straight polarity. Voltage and current were 30 volt and 100A respectively were as preheat temperature were varied at 100°C, 200°C and 300 °C. Results of this research shows that an increase on preheat temperature leads to coarsening the microstructure. A maximum percentage of accicular ferrite and hence the highest impact toughness were achieved at weld metal with preheat 100oC. This acciular ferrite is associated with inclusion in form of MnS, MnO and Al2O3. Better impact properties were achieved at preheat 100oC. Preheat 200°C gave the best result for tensile test.
