- Speaking is the utterance of intelligible speech. Actually, the students understand English text but they have no skill to speak English fluently. Students who can speak English well will have selfÂconfidence to face and even interact with English native speaker. This research was about the difficulties of learning speaking faced by second semester students of English Department at University Muhammadiyah of Malang. The purposes of the study were to investigate the difficulties of learning speaking, to know the causes of difficulties of learning speaking, to know how the students of English department solve the difficulties of learning speaking. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. In this research, the populations were the second semester students of English Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The sample of this study were 20 % of the 251 students namely 50 students. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The data were collected by giving the questionnaires and interview to the students. The result of this research shows the difficulties faced by the second semester students of English Department at University Muhamadiyah of Malang in learning speaking are: choosing appropriate vocabularies, making the correct sentence, making the correct pronouncing, and no self confidence. The causes of students’ difficulties of learning speaking were internal factor, external factor, and supporting factor. The students solved the difficulties of learning speaking based on ability and knowledge.
