- English is one of the important languages in the world besides Chinese, Spanish, Russia and Arabic. Most countries in the world use English language as a mother tongue or second language. It means that it is used for communication among people or country in the world. In Indonesia, English is the first foreign language taught to the students beginning from Elementary School up to University level. English subject teaches 4 basic skills of language: Listening, Speaking, Writing and Reading. In listening subject, the English teacher has to consider some techniques in teaching and learning listening, one of the techniques is using music. This is an appropriate technique in teaching and learning listening because music is very close with our life especially to the students and teacher. The purpose of this study is to describe the students’ and teacher’s responses toward the technique of teaching and learning listening using music. The method that is considered appropriate in carrying out this study is descriptive qualitative. The population of this study is the students at SMU Ahmad Yani Malang and the samples are 23 students at 2nd class. This study uses questionnaire that is distributed to the students. In addition, interview with one of English teacher of 2nd class was also conducted. The result of this study shows that the English teacher and the students at SMU Ahmad Yani give positive responses toward the technique of teaching and learning listening using music because this technique can avoid the student’s boredom, make them more interested and increase the student’s English skill such as vocabulary and pronunciation understanding. Finally, the teacher is suggested to enrich and select the various English songs. And for the students, this technique suggested not only be implemented in class but also implemented at home such as: listening English program from the radio and watching English film.
