  • This research is about teaching speaking skill by using three steps interview at the first semester of the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Jati Agung in the academic year of 2016/2017. The objective of this research are to know the process of teaching and learning speaking by three steps interview, and problems faced by the teacher and the students in teaching and learning speaking by using three steps interview. This research is a descriptive qualitative in which the population was the students of the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Jati Agung. The researcher applied purposive sampling technique to determine the sample of the research. The researcher chose the English teacher and VIII A SMPN 1 Jati Agung as sample of the research. The number of the students at VIII A was 43 students, consisting of 18 male and 25 female. The researcher used observation, interview and questionnaire to gather the data. From the data analysis, the researcher found some problems in teaching and learning speaking skill by using three steps interview at SMPN 1 Jati Agung. They are as follows: (1) First, the condition of classroom atmosphere in teaching speaking using three steps interview does not run well, because during the teaching and learning process, the students were crowded and noisy, they also disturbed each other. They did not pay attention to the teacher. (2) Second, the problems faced by the teacher. The teacher had difficulty in handling the class because the students were crowded and noisy. The teacher had difficulty to manage the limited time in teaching learning process. Third, the problems faced by the students. The students felt afraid of making mistakes in speaking. It happened because the students felt unconfident and worried when they were speaking. Some students in class were worried to say something because they were shy or they did not know how to say it correctly. Besides that, they also worried to say because they did not have much vocabulary enough in their brain for expressing their idea.
