  • Speaking is one of the most important skills in learning a foreign language especially English. Speaking is the ability to express, to convey ideas or feelings orally. The researcher found that many students who study English still have problems to communicate to others because their speaking ability has not developed appropriately. The objective of the research is to find out whether there is a significant influence of using story completion technique towards students’ speaking ability at the first semester of the eighth grade of SMPN 19 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2017/2018. The methodology of this research was quasi-experimental design with the treatment held in three meetings, 2 x 40 minutes for each class. This design used pre-test posttest to find out students’ speaking ability before the treatment and after the treatment. The population of this research was the eighth grade of SMPN 19 Bandar Lampung. The sampling technique was cluster random sampling. The sample has taken two classes, one class as the experimental class was VIII G class and the other class as the control class was VIII I class which consisting of 60 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used the instruments in the pre-test and post-test. The instrument was speaking test in oral form. After giving the post-test, the researcher then analyzed the data using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) Leneve’s Test because the data had a normal distribution. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen from the result of Leneve’s Test that Sig. (P-value) = 0.016, it is lower than 0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. It could be concluded that there was the influence of Story Completion technique towards students’ speaking ability of the eighth grade of SMPN 19 Bandar Lampung.
