- ABSTRACT This research is about teaching and learning irregular verb of simple past tense through matching game at the first semester of the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kelumbayan Barat in the academic year of 2020/2021. The objectives of this research were to describe process of teaching learning irregular verb of simple past tense through matching game, to describe the students’ problems and to describe the teacher’s problems in teaching and learning process. In this research, the researcher used qualitative research method. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to determine the sample. The researcher chose class VIII C as the sample which consisted of 26 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used three kinds of instruments, they were: observation, interview, and questionnaire. The researcher used three major phases of data analysis: they were data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing or verification. After analyzing the data, there were three points of the results. The first, the process of teaching and learning irregular verb of simple past tense through matching game at SMPN 1 Kelumbayan Barat was run well. The second, the teacher got difficulties in managing the time. There was no available textbook that can be used in teaching irregular verb through matching game. And inadequate of teaching aids. The thirdh, students got difficulties in memorizing the irregular verbs that they had learnt; the students got difficulties in prononcing the words; the change of the verb form and confused of the words’ meaning.
