- Asthma is one of the most common respiratory diseases in children and adults. Asthma is defined as “a heterogeneous disease, characterized by chronic inflammation of the respiratory tract. This is determined by a history of respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough, which vary in time and intensity, followed by variable expiratory airflow limitation. In general, asthmatics will complain of coughing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing. In some cases a cough may be the only symptom. Asthma symptoms often occur at night and when the air is cold, usually starting suddenly with coughing and chest tightness, accompanied by shortness of breath (dyspnea) and wheezing.
