  • English has been used as a working language in ASEAN since 15 years ago (Kirkpatrick, 2008). However, the concept of English as a lingua franca (ELF) gets little attention, especially in Indonesian schools. Adopting English will have a considerable impact on language learning and teaching, culture, and communication. Lian & Sussex (2018) state that innovation is needed if wants to realize better English language learning. Sudimantara (2021) in his thesis also said that there is a need for innovative pedagogical models in building transformative education in Indonesia. Therefore, action to find out how and what kind of situation happened are needed. Therefore, this study used qualitative descriptive as the research design. This study also used interviews as a technique to collect research data. Researchers used thematic analysis and wordcloud in analyzing the data. The purpose of this study was to find out how the ELT teacher's perception of English as lingua franca at school was and to find out how the ELT teacher's role was in implementing English as lingua franca in the learning context. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of ELF in schools is very necessary. However, the intended school is not yet ready to implement such a rule. And the role of ELT teachers in schools to popularize English is not optimal because of several things that have been discussed previously (in chapters 2 and 3). The discussion revealed that through English as a lingua franca in the school environment, we can understand that strengthening the quality of education is very important. Therefore, being committed to using English in the school environment can indirectly help improve the quality of education.
