- In this online learning era, many teachers are unprepared for the online learning process using applications (Wiguna, Sutisnawati, & Lyesmaya, 2020). Learning English using the application can reach a great result if the applications and the users can complement each other. The teachers have to be aware an appropriate application for learning English should be relevant to CEFR and provide 21st-century learning principles. Moreover, this study was conducted to develop an application guideline for learning English that helps teachers use and choose the best applications which train the students to build self-assessment during the earning process. This qualitative research used interviews and critical literature review to collect the data, and the study relied on diverse article resources and interview results as data sources. Participants were the students and the teachers at a junior high school who were learning English using some applications. The study found that the characteristics of guidelines based on the critical literature review and interview results provide theory-informed 'do and don'ts,' all the implications of the guideline, the contents of the practical guide for using apps in teaching English, and how to select the apps. The prototype of the application guideline for learning English arranged some components: the guideline's title, the abstract, and the recommendations summary. For future research, the researcher can use more diverse applications and more detailed steps for using applications for each level of education, such as high school and elementary school.
