- This study was aimed at obtaining the empirical evidence about the effect of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Critical Thinking on students’ writing of argumentative essay at the twelfth grade students of SMAN 1 Jawilan, Serang- Banten. The quasi experimental research is taken to analyze the effect of TBLT and critical thinking on students’ writing of an argumentative essay. The population of this study was the students of SMAN 1 Jawilan Serang Banten in Academic Year 20017/2018 which consisted of 24 classes. Each class consisted of 30-32 students. Meanwhile, the sample of this study is limited to two classes of twelve grade students (class XII) of SMAN 1 Jawilan. One class as experimental class comprised of 32 students and the other class as controlled class comprised of 32 students as well. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. Writing Essay data was obtained through written test. Meanwhile, the data of critical thinking was gained through the ‘Watson and Glaser Critical Thinking Test’. The result of this study are: (1) There was effect on writing argumentative essay ability between students who were taught by TBLT and those who were taught by free writing,(2) There was no effect of students’ writing argumentative essay ability between students who have high critical thinking and those who have low critical thinking, (3) There was no interactional effect between TBLT guided writing and critical thinking on students’ writing argumentative essay ability.
