- This research aims to find out the types, function, and the realizations of the impoliteness strategies used by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in presidential debate that was held in 2016. Theory of Jonathan Culpeper‘s impoliteness strategy is used in this research. Additional theories also used by writer, such as Brown and Levinson, Derek Bousfield, and Locher to analyze the research questions. This research is using qualitative method. From the research questions given, the analysis results show that there are 27 utterances that contained impoliteness strategies. There are 3 utterances contained bald on record of impoliteness, 9 utterances contained positive impoliteness, 7 utterances contained negative impoliteness, 8 utterances contained sarcasm or mocking politeness. Meanwhile, both of them not use kinds withhold politeness. Using positive impoliteness become the most used, and bald on record of impoliteness be the least used. Each of impoliteness strategy has own realizations in particular way. Bald on record impoliteness is realized in the form of using direct, clear, and unambiguous. Positive impoliteness is expressed in the form of disassociating from other, be uninterested, unsympathetic and using inappropriate identity marker. Negative impoliteness is expressed by associating the other with negative explicitly, and condescending, scorning, or ridiculing. Meanwhile, Sarcasm or mock politeness is only realized by employing insincere politeness. Using disassociating from other become the highest realization. However, invading the other‘s space, being silent and failing to thank do not appear in the conversation debate. In conclusion, impoliteness strategies used by participants are in some cause different. It depends on how the participants aim.
