- This review aims to describe perimenopause in terms of health and Islamic law. Perimenopause means "around menopause" and refers to the time period during which a woman's body makes its natural transition toward permanent infertility (menopause). Perimenopause is also called the menopausal transition. Women start perimenopause at different ages. Women may notice signs of progression toward menopause, such as menstrual irregularity, sometime in their 40s. But some women notice changes as early as their mid-30s. The level of estrogen — the main female hormone — rises and falls unevenly during perimenopause. Signs for perimenopause include menstrual cycles may lengthen or shorten, hot flashes, sleep problems and vaginal dryness. Islam recognizes that after a full year or twelve consecutive months are marked by the absence of menstruation, a woman is considered menopausal. (Pre) menopause for Islamic women is not only an end to the traditional role of raising children, but it is also a time for women to take on new roles of mentoring younger generations and instilling strong cultural teachings.
