Hookworm’s Egg Prevalences in Anemic Patients in Sebangki, West Kalimantan in 2008

- The prevalence of anemia caused by hookworm infection is still high in Indonesia. The purpose of this research is to describe the prevalence of hookworm’s eggs in anemia patients at Sebangki Village. Cross sectional study were performed to all patients in Out Patient Unit of Sebangki District Public Health Center in 2008. Every patient who came with the symptoms of anemia, will be evaluated as anemia based on World Health Organization criteria using Hemoglobin-Sahli method of blood examination. If the hemoglobin concentration is below normal, it will be followed with fresh faeces examination to find the hookworm egg. The relation between anemia and nutrition status can be calculated using Body Mass Index counting based on WHO criteria for Asia. In 2008, from 1 823 Sebangki Villagers who came to the Out Patient Unit of Sebangki District Public Health Center, we found 784 (43%) anemia patients (WHO criteria), 369 (47%) men and 415 (53%) female. From the Body Mass Index examination result, there were 337 (91%) male and 403 (97%) female patients with anemia who had a good nutritional status. On the fresh faeces laboratory examination of 784 anemia patients in Sebangki Village, there were 434 (55.36%) patients with hookworm egg in there faeces, 214 (49.3%) men and 220 (50.7%) women. The egg of were mostly found in the patients of 40-49 years of age, with similar ratio among femsle (20.9%), and vale (21.3%).
