- Heat shock protein has been known to have important role in insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is one of the major cause of diabetes mellitus. According to WHO, Diabetes Mellitus has the 4th highest peak of mortality rate. Insulin resistance influenced by some factors, one of them is the presence of free fatty acid. Free fatty acid influenced the phosphorilation of insulin receptor mediated by IkK- beta and JNK. Heat Shock Protein is important in preventing the phosphorilation of insulin receptor. The phosphorilation cause inactivation of the insulin receptor. Hsp also play an important role in the defense mechanism of islet cell against free radicals, and decreasing lipid oxidation, which correlated with the pathogenesis of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can be ameliorated by using some modalities which resulted in increasing the expression of Hsp.Keywords: insulin resistance, heat shock protein, modalities
