  • The aim of this study was to improve the management of hearing impairment in geriatry, and specifically to acknowledge variation of audiogram in geriatry with sensory neural hearing loss (SNHL) and other comorbidities. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Neurotology Subdepartement, Otorhinolaryngology Departement, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia/Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta from August to October 2007. There were of 24 male and 38 female eligible subjects with SNHL, age of 60 years minimum. The eldest male and female subject were 81 and 89 years old, respectively. One third (35.5%) of the subjects were senior high school graduated, 37,1%worked for the government. Subjects mostly (59.7%) were Javanese. The mean value of the hearing threshold was 47.19 dB (SD 15.47 dB) for right ear and 44.91 dB (SD 15.17 dB) for left ear. Our study showed that the elevation of intensity was beyond 25 dB standard and thus, was classified to moderate class of SNHL. The hearing threshold in males and females with cardiovascular diseases and diabetic melitus was worse.Keywords: geriatry, pure tone audiometry, sensory neural hearing loss (SNHL).
