  • Hypertension is still a major public health problem in Indonesia and several other countries. Pathophysiology of hypertension involves interaction between genetic and environmental factors. The eNOS3 gene is one of the genes related to the high prevalence of hypertension. This gene expresses the NOS enzyme which regulates the synthesis of NO. NOS enzyme causes vasodilatation, which decreases peripheral resistance and lowers blood pressure. This cross sectional study compared hypertension patients to those with normal blood pressure in the age group of 30-65 years. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of antioxidant intake on eNOS3 gene Glu298Asp allel expression in Minangkabau ethnic group patients with hypertension. The samples consists of 130 subjects. Data regarding their eating habits were collected. The examination of eNOS3 gene and NO plasma level were also performed. The data were analyzed with t-test and chi-square test. There were no association between eNOS3 polymorphism of gene Glu 298Asp allel with the incidence of hypertension. NO plasma level in hypertension patients were 26.91 (15.40) μmol/L while in those with normal blood pressure were 25.79 (15.04) μmol/L. No association was found between eNOS3 polymorphism gene Glu 298Asp allel with NO plasma level. Statistically significant associations were found between vitamin E and carotenoid intake with NO plasma level in GT heterozygote polymorphism hypertension patients and also between retinol intake with NO plasma level in GT heterozygote polymorphism control group. Keywords: hypertension, eNOS3 gene, allel Glu298Asp, NO plasma level, antioxidant
