  • The incidence of permanent hearing loss is estimated between 1-2 infants per 1000 live births. In order to early detect infants with hearing impairment, it is recommended that all newborns should have a hearing test prior to discharge from the hospital. A survey was conducted in six mother and child hospitals in Jakarta and surrounding. There were 7 423 newborns screened from January to December 2007, and 5 334 from January to September 2008. Otoacoustic emission was used as the screening test. At initial screening among 12 757 newborns, 297 (23 per 1000) were suspected to have hearing impairment. Jatinegara showed the highest number (48 per 1000), while Podomoro showed the lowest number (1 per 1000) of suspected hearing impaired newborns. Keywords: hearing impairment, newborn, otoacoustic emission
