  • To test the use of self-assessment method after a training aimed to increase family planning counseling skills, a pretest-posttest control design study was carried out in Jakarta, Indonesia in year 2000-2001. The study involved 263 private midwives which were taken randomly from a population of 994, and assigned to 3 groups. The first group received 26.25 hours family planning counseling training, while the second group received the same training plus 8 weeks of self-assessment program in which midwives made evaluation of their encounters with family planning clients. The control group did not get any intervention. One family planning consultation with client from each midwife was taped for the evaluation of the counseling skills. The increase of family planning counseling skills among midwives who received self-assessment method was 1.79 times higher than midwives who only got family planning counseling training (p<0.000). Increment of self-efficacy to perform counseling in self-assessment method group was 1.7 times higher than the training only group (p<0.000). Linear multiple regression analysis shows that self-efficacy and attitude towards performing counseling were the main predictors of the increase of counseling skills (beta coefficient 0.521 vs. 0.323), and the increment of selfefficacy was caused by the training and the self-assessment method (beta coefficient 0.609 vs. 0.389). It can be concluded that self-assessment method increases family planning counseling skills through the increment of self-efficacy. Self-assessment method which yields good results in developed countries was also proved to be succeeded in a developing country if properly managed. Keywords: family planning, counseling, self-assessment, private midwife
