- The contribution of men to control the child birth came up since gender issue developed. On the other hand, there are limitations of male contraceptives. A male contraseptive pill is being developed in many countries but it have not been released in the market to fulfill the need of male contraceptives for family planning program. Empirically, Gandarusa (Justicia gendarussa Burm.F) have been used by men of Papua tribes to control their family size. Researchs on those medicinal herb in many aspects had been developed by many researchers and showed a good result. They found that Gandarusa reduced the activity of hyaluronidase enzym (reversible effect) which is important to help the sperm penetration during in vitro fertilization. Gandarusa is not toxic, so it is safe to be consumed. Developing a new drug needs a series of researchs start from the basic information of the substance, preclinic and clinical trial. Gandarusa should be investigated to see its effect on the human being. The information of its efficacy , dose, safety will prove whether Gandarusa is a potential medicinal herb to be used as male contraceptive pill.Keywords: Gandarusa (Justicia gendarussa Burm.F), male contraceptive pill, phytopharmacy
