Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Expression in Renal Cell Carcinoma

- Introduction: To study the expression of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) protein inRenal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) and its relationship with prognostic predictor factors evaluatedhistopathologically (subtype, histopathological staging, Fuhrman nuclear grading).Methods: A cross-sectional study on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue of patients withRCC who underwent nephrectomy from 2000 to 2009 and examined in the Anatomical Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia/Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (FMUI/CMH) Jakarta. Forty one cases had well-preserved paraffin block. The blocks that contains tumor area more than 70% were selected and cut 3 micron in thickness. The tissue is stained using immunohistochemical method against EGFR protein.Result: Membranous EGFR expression was found in 46% of all RCC cases (N=41) and in 54.8% of clear cell subtype of RCC (ccRCC; N=31). Cytoplasmic EGFR expression was found in 49% of all RCC cases (N=41) and 41.9% of ccRCC (N=31).Conclusion: A further study on the association EGFR expression and survival, and its comparison to other prognostic factors is necessary. The significance of EGFR expresion in the cytoplasm requires special attention and further scientific evidence.
