Burden and Emotional Expression among Caregivers of Schizophrenic Patients in a Mental Health Hospital

- Introduction: Caring for schizoprenic patients could create a burden among caregivers whichmay influence them physicaly, physocologicaly, socially, and economicaly. The aim of this studywas to know the characteristics of caregivers, patients, environment, also its association between burden and emotional expression that occured on caregivers of schizophrenic patients.Methods: This research was a cross-sectional study with 118 subjects who were caregivers ofschizophrenic patients in outpatient clinic at Klender Islamic Mental Health Hospital in Octobertill November 2012. All subjects were asked to fill the quesionnaire which contained identity,Burden Assessment Schedule (BAS) instrument to assess the burden of care, and Flow Questionnaire (FQ) instrument to assess the emotional expression.Results: In this study, there were 67.8% of caregivers who felt the burden. There were 49.2% of them had high emotional expression. The burden was significantly associated with the emotional expression (OR=5.093; 95% CI=2.13-12.19; p<0.001).Conclusions: Screening for the need of caregivers of schizoprenic patients in mental healthhospital is needed to consider the right intervention, e.g.: education about schizoprenia and skillto treat in order to lessen the burden of care.
