  • Early childhood education plays an important role for children to meet the schools curriculum. Since the formal education is very expensive, the non-formal early childhood education is preferred. The aim of our study was to compare school readiness between children attending and not attending non-formal early childhood education. Comparative analytical study was conducted in April-October 2010. Sixty children aged 5-6 years old with Intellegence Quotient 90-119, have or not attendend early childhood education for 6 months, and live with their parents in Cimahi were enrolled. School readiness was assessed by Nijmeegse schoolbekwaamheids test (NST) and the difference between two groups was tested with the Mann-Whitney and chi square test. Interviews and participatory observation were also performed. The range of NST scores in early childhood education group was 87-105 and in non-PAUD was 81-101 (p=0.299). There were no differences of school readiness between two groups (p=0.734). Three variables among ten of NST analysed separately: fine motor, observational acquity and drawing people were significantly different (p=0.001, p=0.027, and p=0.003). There were no significant differences in terms of school readiness between children who attended and not attended non-formal early childhood education. The implementation of early childhood education has not met the standard of early childhood education.
