- The development activities of the population in Brantas river basin can impact to water quality of Brantas river. The input of dissolved materials produced by the activities of people around the Brantas river basin will have a negative impact on the lives and health of aquatic biota that utilize the river water. The presence of biota is determined by the physical and chemical conditions of the water, so that the community structure of aquatic biota will vary according to the conditions of physical and chemical parameters of water. The study aims to determine the diversity of aquatic biota in Brantas river, knowing the physical and chemical properties of Brantas river water and determine the relationship between the diversity of aquatic biota to physical and chemical properties of Brantas river. Research using quantitative descriptive method to describe the diversity of plankton and benthos associated with Brantas river water quality. The experiment was conducted in June 2012 to October 2012 in Brantas river basin. Samples were taken at five observation stations in the region Batu City (Sumber Brantas and Bumiaji), Malang Regency (Sengkaling) and Malang City (Splendit and Gadang). At each station made 5 substations for sampling aquatic biota and water samples. Physical and chemical factors measured were temperature, pH, DO, BOD, COD, TDS, TSS, Phosphate and Nitrate. Research results show that there are 16 genera plankton found in Brantas river with the highest abundance of genus Dictyosphaerium. Benthos are found in Brantas river there are 12 families with the highest abundance of Family Thiaridae. The lowest diversity index of plankton found in Sengkaling and the highest in Splendid, while the lowest benthos diversity index found in Gadang and the highest in Bumiaji. Based on Government Regulation No. 82/2001 and the analysis results of physical and chemical properties Brantas river water is known that Sumber Brantas and Bumiaji can be categorized as water quality class I, Sengkaling can be categorized as water quality class I and II, while Splendid and Gadang can be categorized as water quality class II and III. Genus Dictyosphaerium (plankton) and family Planaridae (benthos) are found in Sumber Brantas that have water quality class I, so that the biota can be used as a bioindicator of river water quality is clean, while family Coenagrionidae (benthos) are found in Gadang that has water quality class II and III, so that the biota can be used as a bioindicator of river water quality is not clean.
