  • This research aimed to find out the grammatical errors in students' writing and the most dominant error made by the third semester students of English and Literature Department in writing text. The research based on Dulay's theory about the surface strategies of taxonomy which were classified into four different categories such as omission, addition, misformation and misordering. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used writing test and checklist as the instruments to get the valid data. This research revealed that there were 309 grammatical errors in their writing text. There were 136 omissions, 77 additions, 81 misformations and 15 misorderings. Based on the result, omission was the most dominant errors that occured in their writing than other types due to the missing auxiliary and ordinary verb, article, connector, infinitive, progressive marker, third person singular, plural marker, missing letter. The researcher concluded that the students tended to produce grammatical errors when they wrote a text
