  • This thesis was a study about the ability of the students as English learner in distinguishing between written British and American English. There are some distinctions in English as variety of language that have to be understood by English students. The distinctions come from some aspects such as vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. The aim of this thesis was to know the students’ ability in distinguishing between written British and American English and the most difficult aspect among vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. As English learners, being aware and understand the distinction of both is very important in order to get a much-deeper knowledge of language study. The problem in this thesis was analyzed by using quantitative and qualitative method or so-called mix method. The mix method in this case was categorized as concurrent embedded strategy to collect primary and secondary data from test and open questionnaire. In this thesis, the writer found that the students’ ability in distinguishing between written British and American English were average which the mean score is 52.43 and the most difficult aspect that the students get in distinguishing of both was vocabulary aspect. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the students did not have much understanding about the distinction in variety of English especially written British and American English.
