Gender Representation in English Textbook for Seventh Grade Students Published by Puskurbuk: A Descriptive Content Analysis

  • The aim of this study was to analyze gender representation in English in focus textbook through two features, linguistics, and social features which was explored into some categories; gender vocabulary, firstness, attribute, lexis and gender (lexical meaning), dialogue, gender occupation, and psychology aspects. This study used a qualitative research design of content analysis method. The data resources were the English in focus textbook as a document analysis and teachers responses. The data were collected through documentation, interview and questionnaire. Data analysis procedures consisted perusing, eliciting, coding, tabulating, interpreting, drawing conclusion and validating. The result of this study pointed out that the percentages of gender representation found 143 time from the total number of gender representation category. From the total number of the highest percentage of gender presented through descriptive text, procedural text, dialogue, exercises and pictures frequently found was firstness gender features as the most presented in English in focus textbook reached a score of 32.70%. While the lowest percentage found in lexis and gender (lexical meaning) reached the score of 7%, gender attribute reached the score of 7%, and also psychological feature reached the score of 7.70%. Based on the result findings of those numbers, the gender in firstness feature was higher than other features and the lower category of gender representation was found through gender attributes and lexis and gender (lexical meaning). Based on the result of interview, the percentages of teachers? awareness on gender representation in English in focus textbook 85% agreed to be put in English in focus equally. Therefore, English in Focus textbook published by puskurbuk for seventh grade students needs to be revised.
