An analysis of a Javanese student in pronouncing English consonant: a case study in the seventh semester student of English Education Department of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in Academic Year 2015/2016

  • This study was aimed to describe the interference on English consonant pronunciation of p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/ dan /ð/ which was pronounced by student whose mother tongue is Javanese. The research method used in this study was case study. Sample was taken from the seventh semester student of English Education Department of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta in academic year 2015/2016, Ciputat, South Tangerang. This study was conducted by using three techniques of data collection: observation, interview, and test of pronunciation by reading texts. First, observation was done in order to choose participant, whereas interview was conducted in order to gather participant?s biodata and other information to support research evidence and test of pronunciation was conducted to know participant?s pronunciation which then compared to English native?s pronunciation. From the result of data analysis by using an application named Praat was founded some error in pronouncing several words of English. Those included errors in pronouncing consonant sound of /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/ dan /ð/. Thus, it can be concluded that Javanese mother tongue affects participant?s pronunciation in English consonant of /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/ and /ð/.
