Improving students' comprehension of the imperative sentence through total physical response (TPR): a classroom action research in the first year of MTs. Jam'iyyatul Khair Ciputat

  • The objective of this study is to know whether students� comprehension of the imperative sentence could be improved through Total Physical Response in the first year of MTs. Jam�iyyatul Khair Ciputat. In addition, the objective of this study is also to describe how the procedure of Total Physical Response (TPR) method in improving students� imperative sentence. This study is categorized as the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method in which to identify and to solve the problem on students� comprehension of the imperative sentence. This classroom action research was conducted at MTs. Jam�iyyatul Khair Ciputat. The subject of the study is was the VII.2 grade students there were 23 students. In this Classroom Action Research, the writer implements the Kurt Lewin�s design which consists of four phases. Those are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Meanwhile, the data is derived among from the test (pretest and posttest), interview, and observation. Therefore, this study is included into quantitative descriptive research. The result of the study shown that the students� progress in comprehending English imperative sentences during the teaching learning activity by using Total Physical Response method was good. The students� responses shown, that they were motivated in learning English imperatives through TPR activities in the classroom; it looked fun, cooperative and the materials was interested to be learnt. Moreover, the students� achievement in English imperative sentences was improved, it could be shown in the improvement resultfrom the pretest, posttest I and posttest II, the students� average in pretest was 38.04, there was 1 or 4.35% student who passed the KKM. Then the students� average in posttest in cycle 1 was 61.31, there were 13 or 55% students in the class who passed the KKM. Next in the result of posttest II in the cycle 2 the students� average in posttest II in cycle 2 was 69.3, there were 19 or 82.61% students who passed the KKM. In addition, the data showed that there is a significant difference in the VII.2 grade of English imperative sentences test achieved by the students after they have been taught by using TPR method. In line with the result, the writer suggests that English teacher should be able to create their own way to arise their students� interest in following their teaching. The use of Total Physical Response as a method is one way to achieve this goal.
