An analysis on content validity of summative test (a case study at the second year of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri 3 Jakarta)

- The purpose of this study was to find out whether or not the contents validity of English summative test on the second year of MTs N. 3 Jakarta at the even semester 2011/2012 academic year are in line with the reading and writing skills of English syllabus. The writer used qualitative and quantitative in this research by identifying the content of test items and comparing both the coverage and the relevance of test content into the school English syllabus. Then, the writer used comparative result to know whether or not the English summative test items at the second year of MTs N.3 Jakarta at even semester 2011/2012 academic year have good content validity in terms of conformity of reading and writing skills in the English syllabus. This study found that there were 25 from 50 test items that were in line to the recommended indicators in the syllabus. The 24 test items were derived from four indicators which conformed to the syllabus indicators in the reading skill. While another test item were derived from one indicator of writing skill which is used in the school syllabus. It meant that only hal.f of this summative test has appropriate content validity. From the percentage form, the writer also found that the level of content validity of this summative test was 50% which belongs to the level of fair. It showed that there were still some indicators and types of text which did not conform to the school syllabus. In reading and writing skills, there were 21 indicators which were added in this summative test. These indicators were found in 26 test items of this English summative test. In addition, there were also five types of text from 27 items which were added in this summative test. Moreover, the distribution of indicators used in the test items was not proportional or appropriate. In other words, based on the data mentioned above, the English summative test at the second year of MTs N.3 Jakarta was not in line with the school syllabus. It meant that the content validity of this test was fair since it did not fully measure what were expected to be measured
