An analysis on the students errors in forming passive voice: a case study at the second year students of SMK Purnama Mandiri Jakarta

- The objective of the research is to analyze how many errors on forming passive voice by the students and to know the problems found by the students on forming passive voice. The subjects of this study were the students of of SMK Purnama Mandiri, Jakarta at the second years. The method used in this study was qualitative research in a form of descriptive analysis that includes observed, collecting the students� test and analyzed, and interpreted the data about kinds of errors. In this study, the data are taken from observation, interview and test given by the researcher to the students of SMK Purnama Mandiri Jakarta in two classes, the writer uses random sampling technique. The writer took 20 students as sample which comes from XI AK-I is 10 students and XI AP-II is 10 students. The result of the study shows that the frequency of the errors occurs in students� sentence in forming passive voice. From 500 sentences collected from 20 students, it is found 102 error occurrences. The students errors are divided into two categories: misformation 33.33% and selection 66.67%. The highest frequency of errors is selection. Result of this study showed that the most common errors committed by the students is selection which reaches 66.67%. The writer found that those errors are sources by interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer. Interlangual transfer is the errors caused by the mother tongue influence. While, intralingual transfer is the errors caused by the target language influence. This research show that the students still make errors in using passive voice and they need improvement to develop their skill especially in learning passive voice.
