- The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of Phrases and their functions which are taken from the Jakarta Post Articles. In this research, the writer uses qualitative research method with descriptive analysis as the technique of the research. He analyzes on The �Sport� News Texts of the Jakarta Post Articles by reading them intensively and giving attention to each line. After that, the writer tries to explicate the phrase patterns of the texts. The writer finds that some words are appropriate in the phrases patterns of the sentences and they do not deviate from standard English. Such as Noun Phrase �an athlete� Prepositional Phrase �in the world� etc. However, some words that are used in the texts sometimes have the problems with the phrases position. If the choice of words is not appropriate, so it is going to make the readers misunderstanding the meaning and confusing in comprehending the sentence arrangement. By knowing the way of word and phrases functions well, the texts can be easily understood by the readers and they will convey the same ideas to the context of sentences.
