Improving students? speaking skill by using role play; a classroom action research at the first grade of SMP Al Zahra Indonesia Pamulang academic year 2013/2014

- This study was carried out to improve the students? speaking skill by using role play technique at the first grade of SMP Al Zahra Indonesia Pamulang academic year 2013/2014. The subject of this study was class 7B consisted of 17 students. The method used in this study is qualitative method which uses Classroom Action Research (CAR). The role of the writer in this study is as the teacher who implements role play technique. In this study, there are two cycles where each cycle consists of four phases; planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There are three meetings in each cycle. To collect the data of the research, the writer gathers it from observation, interview, and test. The result of the study shows that there are some improvements of the students? speaking skill. Most of the students get a good score and showed some progresses. The score of Minimum Mastery Criterion (MMC) of English lesson was 75. In pre-test, the mean score of the students is 67. In post-test 1, the mean score of the students is 73.17 while in post-test 2 is 80.11. In pre-test, there are 4 students or 23.53% of all the students pass the (MMC). In post-test 1, there are 6 students of 35.29 of all the students pass the MMC, while in post-test 2, there are 15 students or 88.23% of all the students pass the MMC. During role play implementation, the students give a good response by actively following whole activity and instruction. To conclude, role play technique can improve students? speaking skill.
