The subjects of this research was the 90 out of 171 students in tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 25 Setiabudi Pamulang. The method used in this study was quantitative method in form of quasi experimental study where the writer used two classes of experiment (Experiment Class A and Experiment Class B) which were taught simple past tense by using short story writing and a controlled class which was taught simple past tense not by using short story writing. The data were collected by using pre-test before the treatments began in order to know the students? basic knowledge toward simple past tense and post-test after the treatments finished to know how effective the short story writing toward students? mastery in using simple past tense was. The result of the study after the data were calculated by using t-test formula with 5% degree of significance showed that the values of to (t-observe = 3.21 and 3.57) are higher than tt (t-table = 2.00). This means that the null hypothesis (Ho) which stated that short story writing is not effective toward students? mastery in using simple past tense is rejected whereas the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which stated short story writing is effective toward students? mastery in using simple past tense is accepted.
