- Writing is considered as the difficult skill among the others. Therefore, it is essential to use suitable technique when we teach writing. This research is conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the use of mind mapping technique in teaching descriptive writing at the first grade student of SMP Darussalam Ciputat in academic year 2012/2013. The subject of this research is 50 first-grade students (25 as control class and 25 as experiment class). The method used in this research is quasi experimental research. The quasi experimental research design used in this study was pretest-posttest control group. It meant that the writer conducted pretest for both control and experiment classes before doing the treatment, and then posttest was administered after the treatment applied. The finding of this research shows that there is significant effectiveness in the use of mind mapping technique for students? descriptive writing. It can be seen from the comparison of calculation of t-test and ttable. The score of t-test (t0) is higher than t-table. The result of t0 is 7.78, while ttable for degree of significance 5% and 1% are 2.01 and 2.68. It shows that the comparison of t0 and t-table is 2.01 < 2.68 < 7.78. In conclusion, t-test is higher than t-table so mind mapping technique is effective for teaching descriptive writing
