Improving students? reading comprehension of recount text through clustering technique (A classroom action research in the second year of SMK N 28 Jakarta)

  • The objective of this study was to know the improvement of students? reading comprehension of recount text through clustering technique in the second year of SMK Negeri 28 Jakarta. In addition, this study is also aimed to improvement of students? reading comprehension on recount texts in the XI grade students of SMK Negeri 28 Jakarta through the Clustering Technique. The method that was used in this study was the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. It was used to identify and in to solve the problem on students? reading comprehension. The Instruments that was used in this study were observation sheet and test, and the techniques of the collecting data in this study were used interview, observation, and test. It is initiated through the interview the teacher and through the observation in the XI grade hotel accommodation class at SMK Negeri 28 Jakarta; considered as the class whose reading test score are very low. The amount of students in that class is 27. In this Classroom Action Research, the writer implements the Kurt Lewin?s design which consists of four phases. Those are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Meanwhile, the data is derived among from the test (pretest and posttest), interview, and observation. Therefore, this study is included into quantitative descriptive research. The result which was gained in this study was: (1) Related to the test result. The result of posttest in cycle 1, there were 13 or 48.15% students in the class who passed the KKM considering their mean score of the test is 61.15. Then, the result of the cycle 2 test shows that there are 81.48% or 22 students passed the KKM from 27 students. The improvement students? average score percentage from before cycle test to cycle I test was 17.60%, and the improvement students? average score percentage from cycle I test to cycle II test was 52.76 %. (2) Related to the observation result showed that the students were more active and interested in learning reading activity in the classroom. Indeed, they could analyze the schematic structures of the story clustering technique using paraphrase. (3)Related to the interview result, it could be known that the students? reading comprehension in term of recount text has improved and also assisted the teacher in finding the appropriate strategy in teaching reading recount text.
