Improving students? writing ability of descriptive text through mind mapping technique (a classroom action research in the first year of SMP Darul Ulum Bojongsari Depok)

  • The purpose of this research is to improve the student?s writing ability of descriptive text by using Mind Mapping Technique at VII Grade of SMP Darul Ulum Bojongsari Depok. This research is related to the preliminary study showed that students were still confused to compose the material in writing skill; especially in descriptive text. In conducting this study the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of the research. He used Kemmis and Taggart research design which consisted of two cycles and each cycles consisted of four phases, they are: Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. Each cycle conducted in two meetings. To collect and analyze the data, the researcher gained the information from observation, interview, documentation, and the students? achievement in pre-test and post-test in order to support the data collected. The finding of this research indicated that the implementation of Mind Mapping Technique was successful since the criteria of success were achieved. The first criterion was 70 % of students could pass the assessment score above 70 based on the Minimum Mastery Criterion ? Kriteria ketuntasan Minimal (KKM). The finding showed that 73.6 % of students had already achieved the target. Besides, the second criterion was students who become more active involved in the classroom. Based on the finding mentioned before, the writer concludes that the English teacher could implement the method of Mind Mapping Technique in order to motivate students in writing skill of descriptive text.
