This study is purposed to analyze the grammatical errors that commonly made by students at the second years of SMPN 56 Jakarta. The aim of this research is to know the common grammatical errors that do most by the students of SMPN 56 Jakarta and its reason. The sample of the research is 30 students of the second years. In getting the data, the writer used descriptive analysis method. The instrument of the research is an essay test. The findings of the study state that the most common grammatical errors made by the students of the second years of SMPN 56 Jakarta are Usage, Tense, Diction, and Sentence Pattern. Based on the research finding, it can be concluded that: a. The higher grammatical errors made by the students is Usage (174 errors), the next is Tense (145 errors), the third is Sentence Pattern (20 errors) and the last is Diction (15 errors). b. The main reason of these errors is they still interference with their mother tongue, Indonesian language. Furthermore, they translated the sentence from Indonesian language (word into word).
