- Reading is one of English skills that should be mastered by students. It is an activity that relates to how the students comprehend the text. To comprehend the text, lack of vocabularies is the problem that students often face when they read. Meanwhile, teacher uses a technique to teach reading comprehension that cannot accomodate all the students to participate in teaching learning process. These conditions are not effective for teaching learning process. Therefore, writer applies CIRC as a teaching technique to teach reading comprehension in classroom. The aim of this study is to know whether CIRC is more effective to teach students? reading comprehension than reading aloud. The writer held the study at the first year students? of the academic 2012/2013 at MAN 4 Jakarta. The study is using quasi-experimental research. The writer chose X Language and X Religion as samples in this study by using purposive sampling. X Language as Experiment class consists of 30 students and X religion as control class consists of 30 students. Then, instruments that are used in the study were pre-test and post-test. The result of the study showed that CIRC is more effective than reading aloud in teaching students? reading comprehension of narrative text. It can be proven by t-test result and the students? progress score on pre-test and post-test. The writer found that t-test (7.55) is higher that t-table (2.002). Then, the mean of pre-test in experiment class was 54 and the mean of post-test was 77.16. Meanwhile, the mean of pre-test in control class was 52.66, and the mean of posttest was 64.83. It can be concluded that teaching students? reading comprehension by using CIRC is more effective than reading aloud.
