- The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of Direct Method in teaching students? speaking skill at the second grade of SMAN 63 Jakarta academic year 2013/2014. The subjects of this research were 40 students. The method used in this research was quantitative through pre- experimental research. The researcher took one class as the experimental class. Before doing the treatment, the researcher gave the pre-test in experimental class. Then, the researcher taught speaking by using Direct Method in the experimental class. The last, the researcher conducted post-test to this experimental class to know whether Direct Method is effective or not in teaching students? speaking skill. The researcher calculated t-test to analyze the data. Value of the tobserve was 8.81 and the degree of freedom (df) was 39, whereas the value ttable on the degree of significant of 5% was 1.684.. In other word, the value of tobserve was higher than the value of ttable. It meant that there was an effectiveness of Direct Method in teaching students? speaking skill at the second grade of SMAN 63 Jakarta.
