- The purpose of this study is to analyze how good second grade students of SMAN 1 Parung using modal verbs in a sentence. More specifically, it aimed to find out the most types of errors made by the students and to know the reason why the students make errors using modal verbs in the sentence. The writer used cluster random sampling in this research; she took 40 students as the sample of the second grade student of SMAN 1 Parung. Data of this study were collected through test and interview. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis by describing students? errors and qualitative analysis by the formula of percentage. The findings of the research are as follows: (1) Based on the explanations on research findings, the types of error made by the students consisting of omission with 6%, addition with 43%, mis-ordering with 20% and selection with the percentage 31%. (2) The reason why the students make errors using modal verbs in the sentence caused by overgeneralization, students? incomplete application of rule, false concept hypothesized, and ignorance of rule restriction
