  • The objective of the study is aimed to find out and understand the use of metaphors which are found in ?My Life had stood?a Loaded Gun,? and ?Escape is such a thankful Word,? and certainly its contribution to the poems. These poems all collected by David Lehman in his book entitled The Oxford Book of American Poetry. The two poems are chosen because they cointain many metaphors and also reveal the same issues, feminism and gender roles. Besides, in these love poems the poet herself often expresses the feelings in both term life and death. In this study, the writer applies library research and descriptive qualitative method. The results of the research show that the two poems have some significant metaphors such as, firstly, in ?My Life had stood?a Loaded Gun?, the word ?Life? is compared to ?Loaded Gun,? and ?foe of His? to ?I?m? that figuratively because of the similarities they have. Secondly, in ?Escape is such a thankful Word? the word ?Escape? is compared to ?thankful Word? and ?Basket? to ?Battlement,? in which here by using metaphors the poet is transferring to one thing the identity of something else that associated with it. Hence, these metaphors then contribute to meanings of the poems.
