- The goal of the research is to find empirical data of the commonest grammatical error made by the students in writing a descriptive text by applying Betty Azzar�s error classifications. The procedures of the research are as follows: First, the writer collects the data by giving the first-grade students of SMP Islam Harapan Ibu a descriptive writing test that the topic is about place. Second, she describes the errors. Third, she analyzes the errors. Forth, she interprets the errors. The last, she concludes and gives some suggestions.The data were collected from 20 first grade students of SMP Islam Harapan Ibu through descriptive writing test with the theme: My Favorite Place. The research finding shows that the commonest grammatical error in descriptive text made by the first-grade students of SMP Islam Harapan Ibu is word choice (14 errors or 15.90 %). The error was caused by the students� first language or interlingual transfer. In other word, interlingual transfers were committed by the students because there are some rules in English which do not exist in Bahasa. For example: the difference in preposition of times, the difference in verb forms (to infinitive or gerund), and subject-verb agreement. Therefore, the students who were in the process of their foreign language learning transferred their first language, Bahasa, into English
