- A joke might be successful or fail, depends on the context in which it is being told. This study aims to describe the factors that influence the success or failure of a joke, which is strongly related to its context. Using Sacks?s (1981) sequential organization of joke?s telling, Attardo and Raskin?s general theory of verbal humor (GTVH) and also three major theories of humor: incongruity, superiority and tension relief theory, this study examines joke and its appeciation in a specific context. The focus of this study is to analyze the joke in three standup comedy show videos in which the audiences? reaction is also recorded. Based on the findings of the study, there are three types of response that occur in these videos: laughter, delayed laughter and silence. A joke?s response depends on the joke?s content (i.e. the joke?s knowledge resources) and the context in which the joke is being told. In other words, although a script of a joke is supposed to be interpreted as humorous, its reception might be different, depends on who the audiences are and in what situation the joke is being told. However, it is possible for the performer to change the audience response by negotiating it, for example by explaining, repeating, and expanding the punch line of the joke.
