The Effectiveness of Using Video on Students' Writing Skill of Descriptive Text (A Quasi-Experimental Study at the Seventh Grade of SMPN 13 Tangerang Selatan at Academic Year 2016/2017)

  • This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of using video on students' writing skill of descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 13 Tangerang Selatan. The method used in this research was a quantitative research and the design was a quasi-experiment. The sample of this research was two classes which was divided into experimental class and controlled class. It was selected by using purposive sampling technique. VII-5 as the experimental class consisted of 40 students and VII-8 as the controlled class consisted of 39 students. The experimental class was taught by using video while the controlled class was taught without using video. In collecting data, the researcher conducted a writing test which was divided into pre-test and post-test. The data collected were analyzed by using SPSS v.20 and t-test. After analyzing, the result of this research showed that there was a significant difference between students score in writing descriptive text by using video and without using video. According to the result of statistical calculation, it could be seen that to was 5.30584961 and tt was 1.66488. It means that to was higher than tt ¬(to > tt). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Furthermore, the value of the calculation of Cohen?s d formula was 1.21551022. Based on the criteria of the effect size, 1.21551022 was high effect. In conclusion, the use of video has high effect on students? writing skill of descriptive text.
