The Relationship among Students' Mastery of Past Tense, Self-Motivation, and Their Writing Ability of Recount Text (A Correlational Study at the Eleventh Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Sungailiat in Academic Year 2020/2021)

  • The purpose of this study was to get the empirical evidence about the relationship among students? mastery of past tense, self-motivation, their writing ability of recount text. The method used in this study was a correlational study and the sampling technique used a purposive sampling technique with the total number of the sample was 30 students of XI Social 1 of SMA Negeri 1 Sungailiat. The data were collected through questionnaire, grammar test of past tense, and writing test. The students‟ writing ability of recount text data was obtained through writing test where the scores were interpreted using writing assessment rubric. Meanwhile, the data of students‟ self-motivation was obtained through the ?Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB)? adapted from R. C. Gardner. The result of this study revealed that: (1) there is a positive relationship between students? mastery of past tense and their writing ability of recount text. (2) There is a positive relationship between students‟ self-motivation and their writing ability of recount text. (3) There are simultaneously relationship among students‟ mastery of past tense, self- motivation, and their writing ability of recount text. Referring to this research, grammar mastery of past tense and self-motivation have significant relationship 51.7% on writing ability of recount text, while the remaining of 48.3% caused by there is relationship by another factors. Therefore, it is suggested for the other researcher to develop this research by looking for another factor that has relationship to writing ability of recount text.
