- This research investigates writing descriptive text, it is written in the title “An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Using Noun Phrase in writing descriptive text” (A Descriptive Research at the third grade students of SMP Daarunnajah Jawilan Serang-Banten). The objective of the research is to know students’ ability in using noun phrase in writing descriptive text. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative research which aimed describing the students’ ability in using noun phrase in writing descriptive text by the third grade students of SMP Daarunnajah Jawilan Serang Banten in academic year2015/2016. The respondents are 25 students of the third year. The researcher used students’ writing as document to be analyzed. The type of students’ writing is descriptive text. The result of the analysis shows that the students’ ability in using noun phrase classified as good is (44%), as fair is (48%), as poor is (4%), as very poor is (4%). The result of the analysis is in fair level. This research is mainly focused on investigating students who get difficulties in making a complete sentence with a good structure and sometimes make mistake in using noun phrase formed by adding adjective “a handsome boy”. Then, the result of the students’ interview that the most students need more treatment and remedial from the teacher toward their ability on English writing right way and it implies that the third grade students of SMP Daarunnajah Jawilan still need more practice in order to develop their writing skill, especially in forming noun phrase.
