  • This research investigates the effectiveness of the 3 - 2 - 1 Strategy in Reading, specifically it is written in the title of this research paper is “ The Effectiveness of the 3 - 2 - 1 Strategy Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension Ability on Report Text at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kota Serang” . The research is conducted based on the main problems 1) How is the students’ reading comprehension ability at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kota Serang 2) How is the effectiveness of the 3 - 2 - 1 strategy towards students’ reading comprehension ability on report text at the elevent h grade students of SMAN 5 Kota Serang ? In reference to the research problems, this research is aimed 1) to know the students’ reading comprehension ability at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kota Serang , 2) to know the effectiveness of the 3 - 2 - 1 str ategy towards students’ reading comprehension ability on report text at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kota Serang. To answer the questions, the writer collects data from 70 students which is divided into two classes, one class as an experimental cl ass and another one as a control class, by applying experimental research method. The sample taken in this study are class XI IPA 2 as the experimental class and class XI IPA 1 as the control class are taken as the samples. Since , the research uses experim ental method, the data is gathered through pre - test and post - test. T he result of the research show s that the students’ reading comprehension ability before treatment is low. But, the students’ reading comprehension ability after given treatment by using th e 3 - 2 - 1 strategy (experiment al class) shows significant influence . As the finding result shows in pre - test to post - test mean of experiment al class ( 55.01 to 79.58 ). T he result of the t o is = 3.81 and the degree of freedom (df) = 68 , the result of t t on level significance 5% = 1.99 and 1% = 2.65 so t o > t t or ( 1.99 < 3.81 > 2 . 65 ). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted, or there is a significant influence of using the 3 - 2 - 1 strategy on students’ reading comprehension ability on report te xt . From the test result, it can be seen that the class who were being taught by using the 3 - 2 - 1 strategy g e t the higher score than the class who were not being taught by the 3 - 2 - 1 strategy . It indicates that by using the 3 - 2 - 1 strategy in reading, the students can improve their reading comprehension ability.
