- One of the famous methods that used in Modern Pesantren of AlKautsar Karang Kitri in promoting English as lingua franca is through daily English conversation. The central purpose of this thesis is to describe the types of code switching, to explain the functions of code switching, and to explain the reasons of students’ code switching in their daily conversation at Modern Pesantren of Al-Kautsar Karang Kitri. Code switching is a common phenomenon that happens in human society, but the important is the interlocutor’s agreement to switch code in certain situation. Thus, the writer used sociolinguistics study and a case study approach to obtain the data. In this study was conducted about two months from Maret to April 2017 in Modern Pesantren of Al-Kautsar Karang Kitri. In-depth interview was conducted by the writer to four students and two teachers. The writer also took some notes from forty students’ daily conversation. The result of the study those are, there are three types that includes fourteen tag-switching, nine inter-sentential switching, and five intra-sentential switching; six functions; and seven reasons of code switching that used by students in their daily conversation at Modern Pesantren of Al-Kautsar Karang Kitri.
