  • ABSTRACT The inventory study of coral reefs in the tourism and mangroves area at Taman Nirwana Beach, Padang, West Sumatera had been conducted intensively from April until June 2013. Research’s aim to know about compotition and community structure of butterfly fish by using visual census method with limit viewing is 2,5 meters for the both side along the track line 25 m. Through the method, it had been caught nine species of buttherfly fish, which included into two genera, Heniochus with three species, Heniochus pleurotaenia, H. varius, and H. Singularis, and the second is Chaetodon with six species, Chaetodon triangulum, C. collare, C. vagabundus, C. trifasciatus, C. rafflesii, and C. kleinii. The average abundance of butterfly fish at tourism zone is 14.375 individu in 125 m2 and at mangrove zone is 10.875 individu in 125 m2. The abundance of butterfly fish species in toursm zone and mangrove zone are insignificant. According Diversity index, butterfly fish’s diversity in both area are insignificant, ranged from 1.51-1.55, silmilarity index are 0.71-0.74 and dominance index for both area are 0.29.
